Um, Willow Smith is Easily Cooler Than Rihanna & She’s 9!

Damnit and I thought I was a cool 9 year-old! Willow Smith is making everyone look ultra lame compared to her. The kid even makes Rihanna look so 2006.

This 9 year-old wrote the song “Whip My Hair”, Jay-Z heard it and had to sign her.

I swear I’d seriously switch stations every time the single hit the radio until I found out this little cutie created it and now I’m obssesed.

There’s even a message behind it! She’s not singing about June Bugs or whatever the Jonas Brothers do.

Did I mention she’s 9!? She may be rich, and her parents may be famous but you can’t deny talent!

INTERVIEW: Medina, Denmark’s Most Coveted Musical Export to the States

Medina is pretty effing huge in Europe and it’s only time before she conquers the States. She’s sold a slew of albums in her native country of Denmark and is topping charts all around the classy continent in countries like Germany, England, Austria and Switzerland (even Deadmau5 remixed one of her songs). We caught up with the singer and asked some questions we’d been wanting to know since we first heard of her.

TD: We’re kind of obsessed with your music and after watching your videos, especially the one for “You and I” we noticed your impressive sense of style. What’s the style inspiration behind your videos and everyday life?

MEDINA: I’m pretty much my own stylist. I am very comfortable in my own style and I trust my fashion instinct, even on the bad days! I’m mostly inspired by people who trust themselves, trust their style and the way they look. I think all people are beautiful, thick or thin, as long as they’re shining in their own self-comfort. I’m a bit of a rock chick so I always try to mix it with the glamour gala stuff. Most of all I think one’s fashion instinct shines if you just trust the way you look.

TD: Welcome to Medina is your new English album. What inspired you to write and release an album in English? What’s your favorite song on it?

MEDINA: Well, the English album kind of just happened very fast! More and more foreign countries started asking for an English version and when we did it, it just took off way faster than we thought it would. Now the world’s heard of it and Im over-excited about the whole thing! My lyrics are inspired by the life that I live, which is crazy at the moment, inspired by the people I meet or by a split second of a thought. At the moment my fave  is “Addiction”. That song says a lot about the way I feel these days.

TD: What we love about your music and we’ve heard this time and time again is that it’s deep in emotion and meaning but makes us want to dance. “You and I” became the “I’m sad right now but I’m going to dance it off” anthem. It’s very therapeutic so we’re wondering if there’s a reason or inspiration of yours to pair songs that are about being hurt with energetic beats?

MEDINA: I’m a very melancholic person and I think it comes out in the way we write and produce my music. I’m a part of the whole procedure so the sound of what we make is entirely me. “You and I” is originally about the sad faces I saw when I went out clubbing. It looked like people went out to forget about their life for a second, like they wanted to forget about a bad day, a stupid boy or girlfriend or a stupid boss maybe…like nothing mattered but drinking, drugging or smoking it away for a minute. It had to get more and more crazy and wild at the scene, but they really didn’t look very happy. No one at the club was shining from within! That’s what I felt like I saw, so I wrote about it.

TD: Who are some of your musical influences and what are you listening to on your iPod lately?
MEDINA: I listen to almost anything, even things I don’t like, just to get inspired. I’m not a big fan of any specific group or so. Lately Ive been listening a lot to all types of Jazz, heavy french electro and of course Lady Hawke.

TD: What are 3 things you always have in your purse?
MEDINA: La Mer (the mist), my iPhone I bought it so I can blog as I walk, where ever I am in the world and C Vitamins! I’m a busy woman, C vitamins gives me a boost of energy and freshness.

TD: What are your favorite fashion brands and designer possessions?

MEDINA: I don’t have a fave brand other than Christian Louboutin, from him you always know what you get and it’s good. I think there’s a lot of crap in most collections I see, I’m a one piece type of person but I really think Lanvin has upgraded a good bit. My newest purchase is a leather jacket from Phillip Lim, it’s a 3 piece trench-coat with bordeaux leather sleeves and a black front and back! ( I blogged about it!) I LOVE IT! In my wardrobe I would say that my Hermes Birkin bag is definite a favorite. My growing Louboutin collection and my black Balmain blazer is definitely in my favorites also.

TD: List three things that always make you happy? Three things that annoy you?

MEDINA: Happy: Food, Love and Privacy. Annoyed: Ignorant people, racism and those who cant look beyond their own borders!

TD: Do you think you will tour in the United States in the future? What else is next for Medina?

MEDINA: Of course I’ll come over, It’s been hard finding available dates in my calender, but my people are working hard to fit it into my schedule! My future is fun, life bringing and fucking interesting! There are so many great offers out there all ready, I’m just waiting patiently, taking it one day at a time. I can’t wait to meet my US fans. Really!

Danish Singer Medina is Haute in Every Way

When this blog was a baby, I raved about this one Danish singer Medina; a woman with a dope sound and sense of style. In the US, we’re kind of behind on all things cool and European, especially music which explains why it took so long to give you an update on her. Since You and I, Medina has released three music videos which she looks dope as bleep in. Lonely is the latest one which is a single off her new English album “Welcome to Medina” which hasn’t been released in the states yet. The other two high-fash’ videos are for the singles Vi To and Ensom, both of which are in Danish and I’m not going to even front like I know what she’s saying but the fashion alone is worthy of a check out. Keep her on your radar.

Kanye West’s Power is Not a Video…It’s a Painting?

The first 15 seconds of this moving painting was funny mostly because it was reminiscent of Kanye West’s recent Twitter updates. If you follow him, you know he insists on drinking from goblets and has a desire for horses suited for a king.

After panning out of his face, the moving painting blooms and was really impressive. Now what is it about you ask? Director Marco Brambilla said, “As we reveal the setting for it, there’s a feeling of a moment of transition for him. A fall from grace, if you will. It visualizes power, and him as the icon as power, and then at the end of the piece it challenges the power that I set up at the beginning. It’s an elliptical piece of storytelling.

So, Kanye evidently thinks he was Constantine in a past life.

Drake’s Debut Album ‘Thank Me Later’ Out Today

Courtesy of Universal Motown/Cash Money/Young Money

Drake is one pretty amazing artist considering he has gained so much popularity and successs without actually dropping an album himself.

Mixtapes have floated around the web as well as a fake album named The Girls Love Drake released for purchase on iTunes by a shady Canadian label which Drake’s management promptly took care of.

Now his official first album Thank me Later is finally out and even though it was leaked on June 1st, Drake took to Twitter to say, “I gave away free music for years so we’re good over here… just allow it to be the soundtrack to your summer and Enjoy! June 15th!” We think you should do what he says because it is le shit.

SNEAK PEAK: Lady Gaga ‘Alejandro’ Music Video Teaser

Excittttttting. When Lady Gaga sat down with Larry King she told him this video would have a “homoerotic military theme”. Really good way to describe it so far don’t you think? I have a feeling it’s going to own Telephone. What do you think?

M.I.A. Looks Dope on the Cover of Complex’s June Issue

Image via Complex

It’s been a year since she added mom to her list of accomplishments and M.I.A. looks better than ever. The artist was featured on the cover of Complex to promote her third album /\/\/\Y/\ ( MAYA) out next month.

On coming to America:
“The first place I came to was L.A., and I just loved it. From the airplane looking out the window, the landscape just shines—all the lights are twinkling, all the cars are reflecting the sun. It was very Tinseltown. If you’re coming from Sri Lanka and you want to experience the West, that was the extreme end of Western civilization to me—the vastness of L.A. was truly different. I wasn’t impressed with New York, ’cause it’s a bigger version of London. But L.A. was kinda cool. ”

On society:
“Google is the most powerful corporation in the world, and why do you think that is? It’s ’cause they log the most data and they collect the most information and that’s the thing that everyone’s gonna want and that’s the thing that no one’s gonna have. That’s what it’s about and it’s important to tell people in the street or poor people to arm themselves with knowledge ’cause that shit’s a commodity.”

On hip hop today:
“I think Kanye is trying to take it into a new realm and he’s sort of putting the artistry back into it and sort of taking it in that direction. I was having a conversation about Jay-Z and Nas and how it was really crazy how they were having this Nas vs. Jay-Z moment 10 years ago and no one really talks about it now. “
