Runway Recap: Prabal Gurung Spring 2012

Inspiration
Araki’s Sensual Flowers series led Prabal Gurung to focus on gorgeous floral prints. The idea came to life via his collaboration with a London-based printmaker.

Top Trends
Varying shades of purple-lilac, violent, lavender, and burgandy ruled Prabal’s runway this season.  There was also a heavy focus on peek-a-boo elements, both in the garments and the accompanying shoes.

Accessories
Heels that were reminiscent of a ballerina, but in a tougher leather-and-mesh kind of way, perfectly complimented Prabal’s line by playing to the idea of soft materials mixed with hard.

Favorite Looks
His lilac dress with the waist cut-outs and net bottom….I mean, come on. Between that and Prabal’s dress with a metallic sleeveless top and splattered sheer white skirt, it is tough to beat Mr. Gurung.

Thoughts
I, like seemingly everyone at NYFW, found Prabal’s collection to be one of the most inspiring shown for the Spring 2012 RTW season.  Although several of the looks may be considered to be a bit too dramatic for the every day consumer, we are sure to see celebrities rocking Prabal’s most recent looks in the near future.

Runway Recap: Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2012

Inspiration: We don’t know what goes on in Stefano Pilati‘s brain but we know it’s amazing and if  we could guess, we’d assume he channeled a classy jet-setter from the 60′s a meets lady in shining armor for his spring 2012 Yves Saint Laurent collection.

Top Trends: Classic prints like paisley made a cameo as well as super trendy sea foam greens. There was gold metal embellisments and panels on everything from shoes and handbags to the buns atop the models’ heads.

Accessories: Pilati proves he’s brilliant when it comes to designing not only clothing but shoes and accessories once again. We kind of died over all of them including the gorgeous platforms slingbacks with metal reinforced toes, suede booties embellished with metal plates and the suede clutches finished with a gold, metal filigree type design.  The models rocked buns finished with awesome metal armor type scrunchie things.

Favorite Looks: The jewel-tone bomber jacket and skirt combo was really cool as well as the baby doll dresses and typical white suit.

Thoughts: This collection is very Pilati, very YSL chic and being a fan of the fashion house, I am beyond satisfied with Stefano’s work this season. The clothing and accessories were great and totally reminiscent of the 60′s and who doesn’t love the 60′s?

Runway Recap: Spijkers en Spijkers SS12

Inspiration:

Spring Summer 2012 saw twin sisters, Truus and Riet, take inspiration from the fairy tale, One Thousand and One Nights, for their eponymous label, Spijkers en Spijkers.  Combine this with elements derived from Oriental geometry and Spijkers have created a ladylike collection with a distinctive edge.

Top Trends:

Cocktail dresses, ¾ length trousers and straight cut skirts came in contrasting tones of lime yellow, coral, oriental blue and hot pink. Pieced together these bright hues were offset with black to provide a fresh palette for Spring Summer.  A modern twist came in the form of fabric choice, cotton lurex, silk twill and cotton blends leant the garments a degree of fluidity.

Accessories:

The bold stars which adorned the silk dresses were also found on platform sandals, whilst the jewel tones were mimicked in the head scarves which came tied to one side.  Skinny belts were also used to enhance and emphasise waistlines.

Favourite Looks:

The collection as a whole had such a beautiful, cohesive vibe and had more than a few standout looks.  The zig zag hemmed skirt in nude and lime green with matching top was stunning, as was the flapper style, fringed violet and pink dress, complete with oversized tweed blazer.

Thoughts:

There is no doubt that Spijkers en Spijkers have created an incredible collection.  A truly fresh look for Spring Summer, it is the very opposite to the ever present androgynous trend. The Spijkers girl is feminine yet isn’t afraid to pair her delicate dresses with heavier pieces such as tweed blazers.  Statement pieces if ever I’ve seen them, yet in this case statement equals bold but wearable designs, for the woman who isn’t afraid to play with her style and is never overshadowed by her sartorial choices…

We're all super obsessed with tassels so you can imagine how much we're loving Rachel Zoe's Fall QVC bags.

All of the luxe looking handbags are under $300. Check out the gallery for more info.

Style Crush: Rachel Bilson

We all know Rachel Bilson is one of the most stylish ladies in Hollywood but recently we’ve been especially obsessed with her outfit choices. Très Dope got the chance to ask Rachel some questions about her style which she described to us as being “pretty basic” when we were on the set of her new CW show, Hart of Dixie that premieres on Monday the 26th. (We actually saw the pilot episode last week and we’re already obsessed.)

A self-proclaimed fan of online shopping, especially for deals, Rachel admitted she is most looking forward to layering and wearing chunky, knit sweaters in the fall. So are we Rachel, so are we.

Runway Recap: Marc Jacobs Spring 2012

Inspiration: We can’t tell you what Marc Jacobs‘ inspiration for his Spring 2012 collection is but if we had to guess it would be something along the lines of futuristic flapper meets cowgirl who likes to wear gingham prints sometimes. Ah, as if we needed anymore reason to love MJ right?

Top Trends: Drop-waist dresses that took on a flapper feel, sheer gingham fabrics, mod outerwear and heavily embellished coats and skirts.

Accessories: See-through cowboy boots, small handbags, fringe clutches, headbands, sheer socks with heels.

Favorite Looks: The black fringe dress paired with matching coat and the plasticky green skirt sweater-vest combo.

Thoughts: This is definitely one of those collections a real girl will have a hard time incorporating into her real life. I mean, we don’t think anyone can pull off that saran wrap skirt but Marc Jacobs still provided a fun, fashion-forward collection to look at.

3.1 Philip Lim

This pastel colorblock look has got us craving the warmer months all over again. Maybe opting for earth tones will make this look Fall appropriate?

Runway Recap: BCBG Max Azria Spring 2012

Inspiration: The Azrias do what they do best for Spring 2012 and that’s release a collection boasting a ton of gorgeous, silky dresses. This time around BCBG shows off gorgeous color-blocked pieces that look like they were inspired by geometric, tribal shapes but in refreshing way. These frocks kind of look like something a fashion-forward girl in the Seventies would wear.

Top Trends: Color and lots of it meshed with more neutral shades. Assymetrical hemlines as well as high-slits, pleats and sheer panels. No body-con pieces this time around instead were greeted with gorgeous, relaxed-fitting, light-weight dresses.

Accessories: Though kept to a minimum, the accessories at BCBG Max Azria included wooden, sandal platforms that definitely took on a tribal vibe and simple metallic clutches. The clothes did the talking.

Favorite Looks: Where do I begin? This entire collection is one of those you wish resided in your closet because you would never have an “I don’t have anything to wear to this event” moment. The pieces are so relaxed, don’t need to be accessorized and are glamorous without trying hard. The sheer, sporty jacket is a really cool ode to the Nineties and the floor-length gowns, especially the geometric one with sheer panels near the hem, is stunning.

Thoughts: We can definitely expect to see a newer take on tribal and geometric shapes for Spring as well as chiffon pleats. The Azria’s really nailed it, providing us with a gorgeous, easy-to-wear collection for the warmer months.

Noteworthy Fall 2011 Trends: Suits, Capes, High Slits and More

Being that Fall is right around the corner we thought it was the appropriate time to start narrowing down a few of our favorite trends for the season starting with the ones we’ve chosen this week.

So let’s break this sh*t down:

Suits: Earlier we talked about how trendy tuxedos were on the runway and saw celebrities like Olivia Palermo and Hailee Steinfeld step out in them but for those of us who aren’t too keen on looking like a cater waiter at a fancy party, suits are a cool option. Skip the tie and sport a basic crewneck under an oversized suit jacket for a look inspired by Stella McCartney FW 2012.

Capes: Yes, they are back and now even Panchos are all the rage again. Yes, ponchos. We spotted them on the runways of Dior, DKNY, Halston and more.

High Slits: At one point, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley seemed like she made pact with herself in which she could only wear skirts with crazy slits. This look is defiintely for the brave and by no means should be worn to any damn event unless your probably a celebrity but hey, we like.

Long Coats: Dusters are like the sh*t this season. Unfortunately, living in LA, this look would be hard to pull off but if you’re somewhere that actually has weather, you should definitely invest in one.

Maxi/Sweater Combo: Yup, this is a familiar look but we’re still obsessed with it and it’s a perfect way to make use of those chiffon maxis you bought during the summer. The oversized sweater is also a fun way to hide bloating issues.

Black Sashes: We saw them at Badgley Mischka and Monique Lhuillier, a simple black sash is a great way to add contrast to an outfit not to mention cinch up the waist.

Spots: Another major trend this season are polka dots and everyone is wearing them now. We’re pretty sure you have one polka dot piece somewhere so try shopping your closet for this one. Anything goes, from heavy knit sweaters to light-weight chiffon tops.
