Runway Recap: Christian Siriano Spring 2011
Inspiration: The exuberant Project Runway winner found inspiration in the exotic for his new collection. The “exotic” being, “A bit of African, a bit of Asian, a bit of Mediterranean-Greek” according to the man himself.
Top Trends: Recurring features in Siriano’s latest offering include an assortment of animal/earth based prints, draping, ruffles and shoulder detailing. Dominant colours included red, white, tan and taupe.
Accessories: Architectural heels, graphic jewellery and waist-cinching leather belts were all that was needed to complement such vibrant designs.
Favourite Looks: The ballgowns were absolute showstoppers, with the turquoise and brown speckled, strapless creation being an absolute favourite, whilst the gunmetal silver, one shouldered mini dress provided a glamorous piece of cocktail attire. Another noteworthy design came in the form of a simple, metallic t-shirt dress with contouring frontal seams.
Thoughts: Although some remain unconvinced by his design prowess, it is undeniable that there are some impressive looks in Siriano’s Spring show. Whilst the varied collection as a whole can, at times, seem slightly incoherent, there are glimpses of brilliance which work wonderfully. The ruffles increased in size as the show progressed, which resulted in a vivid red dress of epic proportions, being sent down the runway as the final look. Despite verging on the almost comical, it is nevertheless an intriguing look at where the designer is headed in the future.
